Images by Pedro Negron >> On February 24, 2013 IPMS Borinqueneers Chapter 13-007, conducted our first event called Plastic Model Expo. This event took place at the Cosme Beitia Coliseum in Cataño Puerto Rico.
The day started with a slight delay in plans, since a Boxing match Event had taken place in the Coliseum the night before. The floor was not in great condition for our event, but it did not deterred our boys from grabbing brooms, mops and plastic bags to get the place ready for our event.
Our visitors, vendors and participants started to arrive shortly after and everything fell into place according to plan.
For our event it was decided that our judging process was going to be people’s choice, this process allows the participant to select a piece that he likes within all the categories with exception of the one the participant is registered for.
The turn-out was great and to our surprise it was found that we received a total of 160 entries and models. We had also included a Make and Take section within our event, our participants ages ranged from the 7-13 group, giving them the opportunity to build and be part of this great hobby of ours.
To the surprise of our young participants in the Make and Take we provided each a Certificate of participation. We also awarded participation trophies to the 7-13 age group category, who we consider to be the future of our hobby.
During the award ceremony each category was awarded a Trophy for First place and a medal for Second place. In the case of a 2 way tie we had appointed Mr. Juan Rivera as our head judge using IPMS judging rules to break the tie, his services were needed in only 2 of the categories.
Visitors, participants and vendors were pleased with the event out-come. Positive feedback was received immediately from the web pages of auto model clubs in the area and other participant’s web pages. We hope that in the future we could continue to provide good quality events and also be able to attract new comers, and those who have put aside the Plastic, Paint, and Glue for some time. This event was lots of fun.
The effort and motivation exhibited by our volunteer club members was immeasurable, as the group’s President I could not ask for anything more. I am extremely proud of all of them and to be part of a group of excellent and talented modelers. I also will like to thank Mr. Angel Ortiz of AOR Water Services and Mr. Jorge Barnard who provided our group with donations to make this show possible.
Thanks to all.
